Crowns and Bridges

If you have one or more missing teeth, your dentist may recommend artificial replacements. Many tooth replacement options––such as bridges, dentures or dental implants––rely on dental crowns for support, strength and enhanced function. Bayside Family Dental Care provides patients with custom-made dental crowns and bridges in Batemans Bay, NSW.

Dental Crowns of the Highest Quality

A dental crown covers a single natural tooth and protects its overall structure and health. A crown can cap a damaged or decayed tooth or top a dental implant to replace a missing tooth. Ultimately, a dental crown maintains the tooth's shape, size, strength and appearance.

Crowns are versatile and can correct several dental issues, including:

  • Misshapen or discoloured teeth
  • Worn teeth
  • Tooth decay
  • Broken, cracked or chipped teeth
  • Brittle or weak teeth

Crowns can also be used to anchor dental bridges or top dental implants. At Bayside Family Dental Care, our crowns are made from the highest quality materials, including porcelain-fused-to-metal, zirconia and gold.

Dental Bridges Create Complete Smiles

A dental bridge is a fixed partial denture that replaces missing teeth. The bridge of replacement teeth rests against the gums, and the abutment crowns cover adjacent teeth (retainers). The retainers are covered by the bridge, similar to a crown covering a single tooth. However, the difference is that a bridge connects the crowns to an artificial tooth replacement called a pontic.

Replacing lost teeth prevents tooth migration, additional tooth loss and an altered bite. Untreated tooth loss can also lead to periodontal disease and temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders.

The Dental Crown Process

Dr Henderson starts by reviewing your medical history and oral health needs. If he determines the dental crown treatment is viable, he will take a digital impression of your bite. We send this model to our trusted dental lab partners, where a specialist moulds the crown.

Creating the crown can take a few weeks, so we provide you with a temporary crown to wear in the meantime. When the final crown is complete, we prepare the tooth and use dental cement to secure the crown in place.

The Dental Bridge Process

A dental bridge requires an impression to create a precise mould at the dental lab. While our skilled specialists create the bridge, we provide the patient with a temporary prosthesis to cover the prepared teeth. When the bridge is ready for placement, we attach it and ensure it meets the patient's dental needs and aesthetic preferences.

Frequently Asked Questions

Bayside Family Dental Care offers several treatments to replace missing teeth. Our dental team can help you determine which treatment best meets your needs and lifestyle.

Dentures

Dentures are the least expensive way to replace teeth, and they look natural. However, they can also be a hassle for some patients because they must be removed after each meal for cleaning.

The dentist may need to ingrain notches or grooves in the teeth to accommodate the denture. Patients with gag reflexes may find it challenging to wear the appliance.

When patients first wear dentures, it can feel strange in the mouth because biting pressure on denture teeth differs from natural teeth. Over time, wearing dentures can result in bone resorption in the areas of missing teeth because dentures sit against the gums and don’t stimulate the bone.

Bridges

Bridges replace one or more missing teeth by attaching to adjacent teeth. Adjacent teeth act as a support for the bridge, so one must be careful to maintain the health and structure of these teeth. Like dentures, a bridge sits along the gums and can be removed.

Implants

Dental implants are as close to the function, feel and appearance of natural teeth. Unlike dentures and bridges, adjacent teeth are not affected by the prosthesis. Because implants are in the bone, the bone stays stimulated and healthy. Ultimately, dental implants restore natural biting pressure and quality of chewing while also supporting jawbone health.

Dr Chad Henderson is an implant dentist who places dental implants on-site at our dental practice, so there’s no need to visit multiple doctors for this treatment. Your dental implant procedure can be completed by the same dentist in one location!

Missing teeth are a common problem that many adults face. Whether you are missing a single tooth or several teeth, speaking with a dentist about your best options is essential.

Effects of Tooth Loss

Tooth loss can have a wide range of adverse effects on a patient. Other than the obvious issues of aesthetics, there are possible problems associated with speech, pronunciation and chewing foods.

Other severe medical conditions may also arise. In some cases, the remaining teeth may shift, or bone loss may even occur surrounding the missing teeth.

Missing teeth can lead to increased wear and fracture on the remaining teeth. There’s also a higher risk of developing gum disease and infection when a patient lives with tooth loss.

Depending on what teeth are missing, there can be increased pressure on the jaw joints and surrounding muscles.

Tooth Replacement Options in Batemans Bay, NSW

There are several different options that patients have to restore missing teeth. Treatment options may include dental implants, dental bridges or dentures. The only way to determine the best treatment option for your specific needs is to arrange a consultation with Dr Henderson.

At Bayside Family Dental Care, we offer solutions to prevent and treat tooth loss. Whatever your needs may be, we are here to help protect your smile’s health and appearance for life.

Modern dentistry allows patients to have the white, blemish-free smiles they have always wanted. Everyone's dream smile looks different and is unique to them as a person. However, countless people prefer to avoid having dark lines or residue around their restored or natural teeth.

PFM Restorations and Dark Lines

Porcelain-fused-to-metal (PFM) restorations are made of different metals, such as titanium alloys, gold alloys and base metal alloys. Base metal alloys commonly include cobalt, nickel and chromium.

Though base metal alloys are popular for many patients, people with metal allergies tend to avoid these restorations. The crown itself is matched to the patient's natural dental shade, but the base is metal.

A dark line may be visible if the PFM crown's margin is exposed. Visible dark lines may also peek from beneath the crown if a patient has receding gums.

Finally, a black or dark line around a crown may indicate tooth decay. Though a crown protects natural tooth structure, decay can still occur, especially at the crown's margin.

Customised Crowns for Your Dream Smile

Bayside Family Dental Care provides patients with crowns that look, feel and function like natural teeth. Dr Chad Henderson can replace a PFM crown with an all-ceramic or zirconia crown that creates a seamless smile. Neither zirconia nor ceramic crowns contain metal, so there's no risk of seeing dark lines.

We invite your call if you have dark or black lines on a restored tooth or you would like to replace a PFM crown.
