Dental Implants

At Bayside Family Dental Care, we specialise in placing and repairing dental implants in Batemans Bay. Dr Chad Henderson has specialised training and expertise in implant dentistry. All of our dental implants are custom-made and never a one-size-fits-all solution.

Dental Implants for Permanent Tooth Replacement

Dental implants permanently replace missing tooth roots with titanium posts. They consist of three main components: the implant post, abutment, and prosthesis.

Dental implants are considered the gold standard for tooth replacement. Dr Henderson understands the advantages of providing patients with better quality of life. Mealtime can be a hassle for those struggling with ill-fitting dentures or missing teeth.

Dental implants mimic the functionality of tooth roots, providing essential stability for biting, chewing and speaking. They also offer extra support for prosthetic teeth while masticating and protecting the integrity of surrounding teeth and the jawbone.

Missing teeth can create a collapsed appearance in the face, premature wrinkles and reduced lip support. Also, adjacent teeth can shift into the empty spaces left behind, altering your bite. However, a dental implant may be the durable and effective solution you need.

The Dental Implant Process

The dental implant process can take months, from start to finish, because the surgery is performed in multiple steps. These steps may include:

  • Damaged tooth removal, when needed
  • Jawbone grafting, when needed
  • Dental implant placement
  • Bone growth and healing
  • Abutment placement
  • Prosthesis placement

Before the Procedure

Because dental implants require one or more procedures, Dr Henderson first performs a comprehensive oral health evaluation and review of your medical history. If your implant dentist determines this treatment is right for you, we create a detailed treatment plan tailored to your unique situation.

Some patients may need bone grafting or other procedures before placing the dental implants. Your dentist will discuss all of this and more during your consultation.

During the Procedure

On the day of implant placement, we provide the patient with local anesthesia options or sedation to control pain and discomfort. Dr Henderson then carefully inserts the implant post into the jawbone beneath the gumline.

It can take several months for the implant and jawbone to osseointegrate and fully heal. During this time, we give patients temporary prosthetics to wear so they can eat, speak and socialise comfortably. When the jaw fully heals, your implant dentist places the abutment and artificial tooth or teeth.

After the Procedure

Dental implants are designed to replicate natural teeth, so patients can care for them just as they would their natural smile. This includes practising excellent oral hygiene and visiting the dentist for routine exams and cleans.

Benefits of Dental Implants

There are multiple benefits of dental implants:

  • Replaces one tooth or several missing teeth
  • Natural appearance and fit
  • No dietary restrictions
  • Reduces risk of tooth migration and mobility
  • Improves oral health
  • Maintains jawbone health
  • Resistant to decay
  • Preserves jawbone’s health and structure
  • Improves chewing ability and speech

Innovative Dental Implant Technology

In years past, replacing missing teeth usually required removable prostheses. As modern implant dentistry has evolved, dental implants can fully restore the appearance, function and comfort of a person’s natural smile.

We use state-of-the-art OPG and computerised equipment for digital imaging known as CBCT to create 3-D models for exact precision. Our customised dental implants are designed for each patient’s specific smile so they can have functional and aesthetic teeth for a lifetime.

Frequently Asked Questions

Bayside Family Dental Care offers several treatments to replace missing teeth. Our dental team can help you determine which treatment best meets your needs and lifestyle.

Dentures

Dentures are the least expensive way to replace teeth, and they look natural. However, they can also be a hassle for some patients because they must be removed after each meal for cleaning.

The dentist may need to ingrain notches or grooves in the teeth to accommodate the denture. Patients with gag reflexes may find it challenging to wear the appliance.

When patients first wear dentures, it can feel strange in the mouth because biting pressure on denture teeth differs from natural teeth. Over time, wearing dentures can result in bone resorption in the areas of missing teeth because dentures sit against the gums and don’t stimulate the bone.

Bridges

Bridges replace one or more missing teeth by attaching to adjacent teeth. Adjacent teeth act as a support for the bridge, so one must be careful to maintain the health and structure of these teeth. Like dentures, a bridge sits along the gums and can be removed.

Implants

Dental implants are as close to the function, feel and appearance of natural teeth. Unlike dentures and bridges, adjacent teeth are not affected by the prosthesis. Because implants are in the bone, the bone stays stimulated and healthy. Ultimately, dental implants restore natural biting pressure and quality of chewing while also supporting jawbone health.

Dr Chad Henderson is an implant dentist who places dental implants on-site at our dental practice, so there’s no need to visit multiple doctors for this treatment. Your dental implant procedure can be completed by the same dentist in one location!

Missing teeth are a common problem that many adults face. Whether you are missing a single tooth or several teeth, speaking with a dentist about your best options is essential.

Effects of Tooth Loss

Tooth loss can have a wide range of adverse effects on a patient. Other than the obvious issues of aesthetics, there are possible problems associated with speech, pronunciation and chewing foods.

Other severe medical conditions may also arise. In some cases, the remaining teeth may shift, or bone loss may even occur surrounding the missing teeth.

Missing teeth can lead to increased wear and fracture on the remaining teeth. There’s also a higher risk of developing gum disease and infection when a patient lives with tooth loss.

Depending on what teeth are missing, there can be increased pressure on the jaw joints and surrounding muscles.
